Is it an IP SAN or FC SAN... Give more clarification.
If it is IP SAN that is ISCSI... then it should not be ROUTED. If you put Router..or Switch the TCP/IP will pass....but the FACT is no body uses ROUTER or routed network traffic for ISCSI SAN.
If we put router... in between the ISCSI Target and initiator... the TCP packets will take multiple hops or may be single hop to and from to establish the communication. So a latency will come in to the IP SAN... and I am not sure if the router supports JUMBO frames or not....so lot of complications can arise.
