Re: One or Two cluster

its not a good idea to buy old architecture servers because of EVC. Because those servers may hit EOL soon and you will not get vendor support after that.

In fact EVC is for helping customers in these scenarios. Its good to add the new servers in the existing cluster if the VMs are grouped in same category. By this you will get additional fail over capacity and compute resources.

Definitively HA is going to restart the VM's on Host2 unless until you haven't explicitly changed VM Response setting under vSphere HA settings.

Firewall/proxy is bypassed in this scenario. Local firewalls are switched of in the domain by GP settings.

The qouted fragment of the log in the blog looks different. I tried it anyway - no harm to reset winsock - unfortunately, nothing changed.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been reading the forum regurarily for quite a time already. My first post though.

It is ver.5.0 of course.

If you mean the https://client-hostname:9443/vsphere-client. then YES it displays correctly and I am not able to log in. The same problem: vSphere Web Client could not connect to the vCenter Server "IP_address".

Interestingly the log shows

>>> Log for vSphere Client Launcher, pid=12988, version=5.0.0, build=build-623373,

which is 5.0 Update 1!?

Anyway, did you alreadycheck the Windows event logs on the vCenter Server system to see whether this shows any issues? Are all the VMware services running?

Thanks yezdi ,  do vmware has the open defect for this , this is long pending issue. because of this our service wont come up properly and require manual intervention to clean up persistent rules.

we've to look at vpxd.log to find why vCenter is failing . Please upload the latest vpxd-*.log from the following location.

It's (Updated) ESXi-5.0.0-469512

Haven't chcecked Windows logs yet.

Yesterday I noticed VMware VirtualCenter Server not running so, pushed it manually. It died out again so, I gave the whole server a restart. Today it was running in the morning, but now when I look at it it's stopped again (it's set to start automatically(delayed start) of course. Just now I started it again and whe I try to connect vSphere to it I get a different looking window with similar error:

Connection Error

The request failed because of a connection failure. (Unable to connect to the remote server)

Call "ServiceDirectory.QueryServiceEndpointList" for object "ServiceDirectory" on vCenter Server "10.1.0.111" failed.

And only option is CLOSE.

Will start digging in the windows logs now.

UPDATE:

Call "ServiceInstance.RetrieveContent" for object "ServiceInstance" on Server "10.1.0.111" failed.

After refreshing SERVICES snap-in I see that vCenter Server service died again. ILooks like this is the problem. How do I diagnose it form here?

Inventory service, Managment Webservices are running.

VMware vSphere Profile-Driven Storage Service keeps dying too, even though it's set to start automatically.

vCenter Server service stops everytime I tried to connect vSphere to it.

UPDATE2: after manually starting the service I am able to login to the WebClient, but I only get the genral layout and all the content is not being displayed. Got some "java exception: connection reset" too.

Hi Davoud,

I've tried both and updated NIC drivers too.

I've tried all but mostly I'm using route based on originating virtual port ID - which is working fine on 5.1

I've tried using standard and distributed switches and both have the same issue.

NOIC doesnt have any effect either.

If I reboot the Dell chassis switches it generally works again until a reboot or host networking change.

Quite a strange bug between 5.5 and the chassis switches I think.

Geoff.

I would suggest not do that if your vCenter is a VM . I have had several problems with it and you can workaround your way to lower the hardware version using the vmx but thats painful

This blog has VMware knowledgebase article linked that says: Note: Do not run the scripts attached to this article against a vCenter Server 4.x or 5.0 database. For information about purging data in vCenter Server 4.x or 5.0, see Purging old data from the database used by vCenter Server (1025914).

So, because I'm a bit afraid blog article contains same script as in the linked KB and the 1025914 one says to use same steps (scripts) I think I'm going to pass. I am getting mixed signals here ...

I've noticed we have two full databse engines installed 2005 and 2008r2 - don't know which one is in use for vCenter. I also have no enough experience with Ms SQL so, I will let the VMware support work on this one. Have already created a call.

Thanks for that and if the support person confirms this was te problem, I will of course update the thread and will mark your answer as solution.

the drives on this VM are "thick Provision Eager Zeroed"

Thanks for the screenshot.  I see how you can give privileges to users.  But your screenshot also reveals "vCenter Servers 1" at the top left -- that's the easy case, you're already "in".  My question was about 0 servers.  In that case, you may just be stuck.

OK. Have they always been Thick Eager Zeroed ?

not sure what was done before, I was hoping to reclaim some space.
