SAN to local storage migration

$

I just realized I've never had to do this before, so I'm not 100% sure. Any help is appreciated.

I need to extract a vm from a vcenter running 5.0 and bring it into my vcenter 5.1. Downtime availability is minimal since it's production, so taking it down to migrate is out. So is cloning and moving the clone because of data that would be lost while the original keeps running. I used to have one of my hosts zoned to the same storage which made transfers super quick and easy, but I was forced to remove the zone, so now that's out too.

So....if I temporarily disconnect one of my available/empty hosts (provided it was ESXi 5.0) and added it to this vcenter 5.0 into the same cluster where this vm resides, would I be able to shut the vm down and cold migrate from the host and san storage to my host and it's local datastore? Or would my host still have to see the shared storage the other hosts in the cluster see?

First, take in mind that if the host managed by vCenter 5.1 that you will move to vCenter 5.0 is running ESXi 5.1, you will not able to add this hosts to vCenter 5.0... the ESXi version must be equal or lower than vCenter version.

But, if the host that you will move is running version 5.0, just add to the vCenter 5.0 and make a cold migration of your VM.

Hi Richardson-

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, I understand about the versions, which is why I put in this part.

(provided it was ESXi 5.0)

Cool, so I can add this host and cold migrate from SAN storage to the local disks, even though this newly added host can't see the same SAN storage! Sweet, problem solved.

Thanks again!

Lab Copy

Hello.

I have a SAN with multiple VMs on it.  With someone's advice, I found a older system, put ESXi 5.x on it, and decided to make a lab out of it.  Was wondering if there is a way (and there has to be) to copy my production VMs and datastores from the SAN to the Lab so I can break stuff, delete it, and then get a fresh copy?  And if so, where is good documentation on how to do that?

Also, I have purchased a different server (old-data1.esxi5.com) designed to hold older data that doesn't have to be on the production SAN.  It just needs to be kept for legal purposes.  In one situation, I have a complete datastore that is nothing but 1 volume.  It's completely packed,  Would like to take that old data, copy it to the old-data1.esxi5.com and then delete the stuff on the SAN freeing up a serious amount of usable and rather expensive space.  Where is good documentation on how to do that?

Thanks to anyone and everyone who can help a newbie.

If its windows 3.1 then i understand. 3.11 could access standard smb fileshares.

However, there is a way, but its not well documented, and not very well synchronised.

You can add a disk to the VM, and share a virtual disk, but there is limitations and risks of file corruption is large.

I would actually solve this by having a vm disk that you can mount and dismount on the VM as you need it. When its dismounted, you can access it like you described earlier

Solutions:

  • use the vsphere Client, browse the SAN datastore and download the Complete VM, then use the vsphere Client to upload to the lab servers. Slow but reliable
  • Add the same SAN Storage to the lab servers and copy over
  • Set up a NFS share that can be accessed both by atleast one of the Production hosts, then clone the VM out and remove from Inventory, then let a lab host pick it up and migrate it to its own stores
  • Vmotion, using same network as Production hosts, but without shared Storage the vms must be turned off.

You're welcome and just another tip, using vSphere 5.1 you can migrate online even without shared storage using the Enhanced vMotion available with vSphere Web Client, take a look: vMotion Enhancement in vSphere 5.1

Migrate application layer to new VM with different OS?

I have a VM running an old version of Ubuntu OS. This VM hosts an application that was developed by a contractor who is no longer with my company, so anyone who really understood the inner workings of it is now long gone. Is there anything in the VMware suite of products that would allow me to basically pick up the application layer on this old Ubuntu VM and stick it on a new VM running Red Hat OS?

No, this is an issue With an Application inside a VM, and that is purely a OS issue and you need do this using the OS.

What you can however do, is to make clones and then do test Upgrades With the ubuntu dist-Upgrade command and see if the system Works afterwards

As per my knowledge, vDS is included with vSAN license and It should work fine irrespective of any ESXi licenses

UUID is case sensitive make it as doofrats said it worked for me. In my case UUID was in caps and then have changed it as it was before, it works for me.

Thanks doofrats

Hey billdossett,

I also ran into this error when I updated my VMKs mtu.

I corrected this by following kb 2079655

It says it is for the virtual appliance, but it fixed it for my windows install as well.

Strange bug where you need to refresh vmk adapters in the web client !?

Cheers,

Zong.

New virtual Machine Wizard configuration

Hi,

Is there a way to change the default choices the new virtual machine wizard selects in each step when I choose Custom configuration ?

And the same question when I choose Typical configuration.

I would like to save time and errors to make the vmxnet 3 the default adapter.

But it is not the only parameters I would like to change.

Thank you for your help.

Ludovic.

I removed the battery from the mainboard of my blade no result...

Hi,

I have a question about the kb Controlling LUN queue depth throttling in VMware ESX / ESXi (1008113).

I have to change these parameters on a HP EVA4400 storage because I found in vmkernel many messages of this type:

Looking in HP I found this article

I would like to know if these parameters can be changed with the virtual machines running or whether it is better to put the hosts in maintenace mode.

Thank You

Re: ESXi 5.5 u2 upgrade makes software iSCSI fail. Workarounds?

The real end result of this is that I plan to toss the 5.5 disc into a biohazard container and go back to 5.1.

After patching firmware on literally all the hardware in the box and then fresh installing 5.5 and using hardware iscsi instead of software iscsi it STILL starts acting insane after 24-48 hours. So this issue whatever it is had no connection to software iSCSI.

I may try 5.5 in a limited test capacity down the line but for now - come back, 5.1, all is forgiven...
