I did the same test on 2 different nodes IBM x240 based on LSI SAS2004 ESXi5.5
And I get with HDTune :
RAID 1 via 2 x 300GB 10k SAS : 4.8 MB/s
RAID 1 via 2 x 1TB 7.2k SATA : 80.2 MB/s
Same result on the 2 nodes...

I think its guest which is triggering the action, not the esxi host. Please check if there any schduled jobs/system crashes around that time.
Hello everybody,
I use vSphere 5.5. A goal is: share virtual disk between 2 vms, vms are Windows machines.
I can't use network share between machines because one of them uses vpn which disconnects network disks, I need such share to have a possibility to copy some files from machine which has an access to the network to the machine with vpn.
Is it possible to do something like this? Maybe there is other solution?

If I understand the problem properly, you might be able to do what you want with Raw Device Mapping; take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002782.
Note the caveats in there, and if you do try, you'll probably want to make sure one machine is in read-only mode as per the KB.

Ok, I was looking for something online, meaning, I copy files to the shared disk in vm1 and they appear in vm2 without unmount and remount disk.
No, it never work under "Multicast" It can work under "Unicast" only.
Under "Multicast", I can ping both cluster DNS and both cluster nodes.
Any settings required on network switch ?

when your NLB is in Unicast, network switch porgroup where your clustered nodes (VMs) are connected is having notify switches set to NO
this is not required when your set your NLB in multicast

The current version of ESXi = ESXi 5.0.0, build 1311175
I tried to upgrade via VIB ESXi500-201510001 but when the server restarts it displayed the attached screen.
However, after rebooting the server again it return tro the previous build number (1311175).
I need to upgrade my ESXi to the latest build(3086167).
Can someone help me

On the same day I used the same VIB to upgrade a Dell R610 from ESX5.0 914586 to 5.0.0 3086167. The intervention was successful without any issue.
- 1 Processor X5660
- 32 Gb
What command was used to upgrade to " ESXi500-201510001" .
If you have used esxcli software vib install <xxx> , then try esxcli software vib update <xxxx>

Only the R610 was successful.
What is the difference beteen the vib install and vib update??
vib install - Installs the software available in the software bundle without checking the existing version installed on the server. It could downgrade software if you have async drivers installed
vib update - Updates the existing installation with new softwares available in the software bundle. It will never downgrade any software as this does a version comparison before upgrade.
The problem on one server and not in other server could be due to different hardware and driver . Please try the server with vib update command and share your result
The default firewall in esxi does not stop ICMP. It is allowed by default .
I am not aware of any easy method of stopping this .
if you have distributed virtual switch ( DVS) license , then it has a feature called traffic filtering where you can set ACL's at portgroup level . That can be used to stop ICMP traffic. Refer vSphere Distributed Switch, Traffic Filtering - VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs for a quick reference

I have:
- A esxi cluster made up to HP blade servers
- each blade has a single dual port HBA
- One port goes to SAN 1 and the other goes to SAN 2
If one port on the single HBA fails... no issues
However what is the exected outcome if the actual HBA fails? I struggling to understand how ESXi would handle this...
Can I test this within vCenter? is there a way for me to be able to disconnect the HBA from the host within vCenter?

Tried to wait 1-2-3 hours - no changes, no pings (and I have no external GPU). Tried to upgrade version from 5.5 to 6.0 and again the same problem but with another tip:
vmkapi_v2_1_0_vmkernel_shim loaded successfully
and then stuck - no ping of the server...
Does anyone know how to handle this?
