Re: Use Case Question -- Using ESXi for a render farm

Rendering really does not use graphics card calls it is simply doing the math calculations for rendering the 3D images -

I would recommend keeping the number of vCPU to 1 or 2 per rendering machine with sufficient memory

FC problem with ESXi5

$

Dear holders of knowledge!

I came across a FC problems while trying to get a NetApp FAS 2240 with 8.1.3 7-mode working in a vSphere 5.0 environment.

The storage connects perfectly to the SAN, the zoning is correct and follows the single-initiator guideline. However the ESX hosts were not able to see the newly added targets.

Doing a reboot of the ESX hosts or resetting the fabric port made them see the new target and the LUNs. All paths were there and Alua worked fine then.

Not a big thing until now but then I did some controller failover/giveback tests. The hosts survived the failover without problems but did not see the dead paths as active again after the giveback finished. Again, rebooting or resetting the FC port made the hosts see all paths again.

I found a command echo „scsi-qlalip“ > /proc/scsi/qla23xx/* which triggeres the HBA to login to the fabric again and after that the new targets/revived paths immediately showed up without rebooting/resetting.

Fabric OS is 6.2.2.b (RSCN are enabled)

FC HBA is QLA2312 with firmware 1.54

Hosts are HP BL25p G2 in a p-Class Blade Center

Another host with the same HBA is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and after updating the firmware to 1.54 every things works as it should.

Anybody any ideas what could be behind this issue of not seeing changed targets in the fabric?

Thanx and greetings,

Stephan

ESXi Disable auto release mouse

Hi

When you  open a console from vsphere/vcenter and the Guest OS has vmware tools installed, the mouse cursor is automatically released back to the host when you move the mouse outside the console window.

Whilst this is a useful option, I have an issue with controlling a VM and its GPU passed through to multiple monitors. Is there any way this auto release feature can be disabled so that the mouse is 'stuck' in the Guest VM until I press Ctr-Alt?

Thanks for your help

I've just installed TP-LINK TG-3468 on my ESXi 5.1 HP Proliant DL 380 G5 Server.

It works like a charms- No issue for only 8 euro.

esxtop in batch mode does not use config file

$

I am trying to collect disk statistics using esxtop (resxtop would be fine too), but it appears that it ignores my saved configuration.  If I run it normally, it does read the config file, but not in batch mode.  The resulting file is too large for me to import into Excel.  Anyone else experiencing this?

I suppose I could attempt some post-processing with awk or Perl, but what I really would like is for the program to behave as describe in the documentation and to use the saved config file when in batch mode, just as it does in interactive mode.

Here is my current .esxtop50rc, saved in my home directory on the vMA:

vMA:~> cat .esxtop50rc

ABcDEFghij

aBcDefgHijKLmnOpq

ABCdEfGhijkl

ABcdeFGhIjklmnop

aBCDEFGH

AbcDEFGHIJKLmno

ABCDeF

ABCDe

9u

I have also activated ssh and gone on the ESXi host and run esxtop there, but I get the same behavior.

Best way to have HA and Fault Tolerence Non-Shared Storage

$

I'm new to Vsphere and finally got it implemented in our environment.  I'm not able to convince management to get a SAN for shared storage.  I basically have two hosts and have 6 virtual servers, as of now I'm running them all on one host and periodically coping them over to the other host for a cold standby.  I'm looking for some suggestions on the best methods for creating HA and FT with this setup.  I currently don't have vCenter, which I'm assuming is almost a necessity.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike welcome to the communities,

vCenter Server is a must for HA and FT.

You should check out the vSphere Essentials Plus kit, which contains a vCenter license to manage up to 3 hosts and the ESXi licenses for 3 hosts with up to 2 processors each. This is should be the cheapest possibility for small environments like yours.

Nevertheless you need a shared storage to use those features.

It doesn't always has to be a SAN though. a NAS might do it as well. ESXi supports NFS shares as Datastores for VMs.

Vendors like Synology for example offer small VMware certified NAS boxes.

You can find VMware certified systems here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=san

Hi All,

I`m looking for reason why VM goes in freeze state as soon as my datastore goes out of free disk space.

Any response would be appreciated.

Hi welcome to the communities,

are you looking for a reason why the datastore runs out of space or why the VM freezes?

The VM is paused by the host to prevent it from crashing when the datastore is out of space.

Regards

Tim

Hello varun,

Vm freezes due to data store over provisioned.

Here is the scenario: Assume that you have a data store which is capacity of 1 TB and you have allocated 1.2 TB of thin provisioned space to a VM. In thin provisioning we can always provision more than what data store is having to save the storage cost. If the VM space utilization is below than what we have allocated it is well and good, if in case if the VM space\disk utilization reached to what we have allocated(1.2 TB in this scenario) it will freeze the VM due to less space in data store and required the additional space to perform its operations.

Recommendations: 1) Always provision the space with in the capacity, Do not over provision Data store...

                            2) Monitor over provisioned Datastores with Alarms by providing certain threshold values.

Hope i have answered your query..

OK - Paravirtual SCSI driver should not be underestimated. Read performance when reverting to LSI Parallel is half that of PVSCSI.

So the performance gains are massive on 2003 which defaults to LSI Parallel SCSI.

2008 doesn't seem to have any performance issues as it uses the LSI SAS SCSI.

Dear Henderson,

Yes, the firmware on the IBM Server is up to date including:

Hi vaibhavlohar1985,

The diagnostic screen indicates you are experiencing a known issue (VMware KB2059053) which can be resolved by patching the host or changing the virtual NIC on your VMs from e1000 to vmxnet3.  The 0xbad0001 (195887105) is a just VMK_FAILURE related to your coredump configuration.  You can correct that by reviewing VMware KB2012362.

Good luck and let us know if you need any additional help.

Great advice above.  Also just curious since it was not explicitly stated, have you tried pinging at 8000?  If that works, then ensure that the Juniper physical switch is configured at 9216 (same holds true on Cisco switches).

looks like my expertise is not so good to analyze the vmkernal logs, attaching the latest PSOD screen shot and kernel logs, please see if can find anything. thanks a ton to all and will appreciate your sooner response.

Can I get someone to glance at the PSOD I got on a new install of 5.5 ?

Installed this on Friday night and this Monday morning it was sitting at a purple screen. Ran fine all weekend as far as I can tell.

Its a DL380p G8 with both p420i and p420 Raid controllers

using HP-ESXi 5.5.0 iso 1331820

I think its yelling about the Raid controller but cant say for sure.

Looking at the vmkernal log im seeing this line over and over.

2014-03-09T13:08:07.636Z cpu2:286677)<4>hpsa 0000:02:00.0: out of memory at vmkdrivers/src_9/drivers/hpsa/hpsa.c:3562

2014-03-09T14:30:45.964Z cpu11:303182)<4>hpsa 0000:0a:00.0: cp 0x410a2b700000 has status 0x2 Sense: 0x5, ASC: 0x20, ASCQ: 0x0, Returning result: 0x2

I attached vmkwaring.log and vmkernal.log and a screenshot of the error.

Thank you guys!

after one or more days it isn't more active. so i look in the vSphere Client -> its not active.

So from vSphere client, it says tools not running, if I am understanding it correctly?

yes and it's really not running on the system when vSphere Client it says..
i've tried to start vmware-tools during the problem exist. So vSphere-Client say for a short time it's active, but then it's stopped again after a few seconds.

When i will restart the vmtools not during this problem, so i can restart it normally.
because of "internal connection problems with the "mysql-server" the server-processes crashed.
The mysql-server become a work with a lot of querys/s

the VM have the Ethernet E1000 adapter and sometimes i receive the following error in the system-logs:

limiting open port RST response

Do you mean that caused the problems?
and when yes what can i do to fix it?

regards
Mayena
