hir restore to a different esx host v2v

hi,

i have the following setup: win2k8 r2 64bit virtual servers running on esx 5.1.

servers are backed up using shad protect version 4.x. i am trying to recover an image onto a different vm at a different site using recovery env 4.2.6 after i do the restore which involves adding the additional drivers (vmware) from the recovery env cd the serve\er boots and gives me the BSOD with the code 0x0000007B

looking into this it seems that its related to the controller. i am backing up a vm and restoring into another vm (place holder vm). they are using the same controller LSI Logic SAS. i have used this method to do 40/50 other servers physical and virtual so i am a little confused as to why this is not working. i have tried 4 other server from the same environment and they all do the same with the same error.

any help appreciated with this.

thanks

5.1 - VIM Performance warnings

Hi

I've seen in the syslogd those warnings every few seconds:

[FFF42D20 warning 'vim.PerformanceManager'] Calculated write I/O size 1036756 for scsi0:1 is out of range -- 1036756,prevBytes = 33479446016 curBytes = 33515732480 prevCommands = 38971curCommands = 39006

[29AE0B90 warning 'Default'] Can't convert IP Address of type 0
[FFB82B90 error 'EnvironmentManager'] Unable to obtain the default HW version

Can someone explain me the vim.PerformanceManager warnings?

Another question is about the "Can't convert IP Address of type 0

I know the KB article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1038790 but I can't belive that we really have to migrate each guest to figure out which guest's are generating those warnings. Can we figure out the guest in any other way?

Thx for any suggestions

Wayne

Almost 1 year later, we are on build 1021289 and the "cosmetic error" is still there

I think it's just broken like you assume, I can't get it to work either.

However, you can still use the vmkping -I command which supports specifying an outgoing interface, only on ESXi 5.1 though. 5.0 or prior does not support it.

See:

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003728\

The actual objective here is to try to figure out which vmkernel NFS traffic can, and cannot communicate over so I'm open to other ideas and options in pursuit of that goal. TIA.

A few other options:

- Play with the routing configuration esxcfg-route to  set an alternate default interface for the specific NFS subnet.

- Disable the other vmknic like esxcli network ip interface set -i vmk1 --enabled false

- Switch the physical vmnic mapping of the vmkernel ports

This powrcli script will help you to get the IPv4 details of the windows VMs. by doing this we can find out which VM has incorrect IP settings.

HP Monitoring ESXi 5.1

Hi,

I have an HP DL380 G5 running ESXi 5.1.0 and all I really want to do it to get an email alert if one of the disks in the array fails or if a PSU fails.  I have read so many posts about this but none seem to give me a solution.

I have read some that mention vCenter Server and some which mention HP SIM.  I don’t want to have to pay for any software.  Can anyone suggest the simplest method to do this?

Thanks

http://serverfault.com/questions/342383/how-do-i-get-my-hp-servers-to-email-me-when-a-drive-fails

This depends slightly on the operating systems you're running on the  servers, but in general, it is possible to obtain alerts from HP  ProLiant servers and Smart Array RAID controllers.

The full driver and software support listing for your DL380 G5 systems is listed here.

SNMP and a monitoring solution is the best approach... But you can augment that with some of HP's tools. HP offers the HP Systems Insight Manager,  which is available for download and also comes with the servers. This  is ideal for collections of servers. If you're looking for one-off  alerts without building a management or monitoring infrastructure, you  can simply install the HP Management Agents (aka ProLiant Support Pack).

For standalone Linux systems, I'll have the agents send traps via  email. I'll usually configure the support pack with defaults or a custom bundle, then edit /opt/hp/hp-snmp-agents/cma.conf and change the trapemail line to point to the recipient address:

########################################################################
# trapemail is used for configuring email command(s) which will be
# executed whenever a SNMP trap is generated.
# Multiple trapemail lines are allowed.
# Note: any command that reads standard input can be used. For example:
#             trapemail /usr/bin/logger
#       will log trap messages into system log (/var/log/messages).
########################################################################
trapemail /bin/mail -s 'HP Insight Management Agents Trap Alarm' systems@1234.net

Create new guest OS with static ip adres ESXi

Hi,

I would like to create guest os(example Ubuntu,Windows) with static adres, without log in to virtual os and changing network configuration.
Perhaps some templates where I can put value = "ip adress".
Is this possible ?
When I use DHCP, after reboot machine I will get different ip adress for virutal os ?

You made my day Yezdi, thx

But after we got all the IPv4 information's, we can't find any "not properly configured" nic's. The only thing we have are some Loopback Pseudo-interface 1 adapter with a 127.0.0.1 configuration. Could it be a IPv6 problem what is generating the "Can't convert IP Address of type 0" warnings? We don't use IPv6 at all and that's why we disabled just the protocol on all the guest. So do we have to disable all IPv6 components on our 2008R2 and 2012 servers with netsh although Microsoft strongly advise against?

How you guys handle the IPv6 in your vSphere enivronment?

I did a POC for Trend Micro Deep Security 9.0 and ran into the following shortcomings when using with vCloud Director 5.1:

- Deep Security cannot protect Windows VMs, if the VMs have the same SID.  It will come up as "duplicate SID" and will not be protected.  Unless you have a way to enforce the tenant to click on "Generate a new SID" checkbox in the customization box in vCloud Director when deploying a new VM/vApp, it will be difficult to ensure that the new VMs deployed by the tenant will be automatically protected.  I spoke to TrendMicro about this, and this issue existed in Deep Security 8.0 as well, and they submitted it as a "feature request"

- In order to make the vShield Endpoint based anti-virus solution work, all of the VMs will have to have VMTool installed, with a custom option to make sure that vShield Endpoint driver/agent is installed.  I spoke to VMware vCloud Product Manager about this, and requested that "Install VM Tool" option in vCloud Director would automatically install this agent/driver.  That should take care of the Windows VMs.  Also, with so many different flavors of Linux OS out there, it will be very difficult to ensure that VMTool is installed automatically on all of the Linux VMs that the tenants deploy.  This issue will hold true for any vShield Endpoint based anti-virus solutions.

These products seem to be geared more toward VMware View environment, where you have the complete control of the template.  I have not come across a solution that will work seamlessly in vCloud Director environment yet.

Ok, shame on me, the second WINS server should still be available in the network of course! We had a few guest with an old second WINS server and after changed those settings we don't have any further "Can't convert IP Address of type 0" warnings anymore.

USB Devices Not Working After Shutdown

ESXi v5.0.0 623860 running on a Dell PowerEdge T320 from an internal USB flash drive.  Primary guest OS is SBS 2011. Since the system was installed last July, external USB hard drives have been used w/o issue as the backup devices for SBS. Though its been a while, I recall enabling USB passthrough to allow the SBS guest to see and use the drives. All worked flawlessly until the host was shutdown. Since it was powered back on, SBS no longer sees the USB drives. In the VSphere Client under Hardware --> Advanced, I see the USB controllers enabled for passthough.  I've read through several KB articles and forum posts, and am still looking through them, but as of yet I've found no solution.  The output of lsusb is empty, not a single character of text is returned, but I can't tell from some of my readings if that is in normal when VMDirectPath is enabled.  The option to add a USB device to a guest (the SBS or an XP vm), is grayed out because "a USB device is not attached to the system."  In addition to an external USB drive, there is an APC Smart-UPS connected by USB.  Not that in the screen shot below, there is a USB 3.0 controller installed in the system but the devices are connected to the onboard USB 2.0 ports.

Any suggestions are appreciated and thanks for taking the time to read and ponder my situation.

VMware design - SRM, vMotion and redundancy

$

Greetings VMware geeks,

I am currently consulting a company with VMware, and i've met some .. uncertaints on my way, and i would like to hear if the community has any advice

The current setup is as following:
6 hosts, 2 clusters, 2 NetApp SAN's and 2 vCenters.

Configured as 3 nodes in each cluster, and each cluster in its own datacenter on its own vCenter server.

The vCenters does not use linked mode. So there is no communication between the two sites at all.

The current logical setup is described in this picture: http://torgeirarnoy.no/Current_vmware.png

Now, with this setup its not possible to use vMotion and its no redundancy at all between the two datacenters.

The physical setup is two datasenters, but they both have the exact same network setup, and a very high network capacity between eachothers.

(So there is no bottlenecks in sight here)

So i dont see why there should be two vCenters in  the first place, right? Why not setup the two clusters in the same vCenter server using the same datacenter (vCenter datasenter)?

We (they) also got a Site Recovery Manager (SRM) license for 25 VMs. That could be used for disaster recovery between the two physical sites, but still, no vMotion.

So my idea is:

* Cross mount the NetApp disks so all 6 hosts can use them (required for vMotion).
* Use only one vCenter and attach the 2 clusters under one datacenter (vCenter datasenter).

* Make a datastore cluster out of theese two NetApp disks to replicate data for redundancy.

Here is an drawing on how i might see the optimal setup: http://torgeirarnoy.no/Vision_vmware.png

The problem:
* No redundancy on the vCenter server. What if the site that holds the vCenter server goes down. Will HA etc continue to work?

Any advices here will be deeply valued.

Regards, Torgeir.

I've been trying to work on some ldap settings in vcenter but have been experiencing a problem.  On 5.1 when I log into the web client and click Administration I can see the sign on and discovery section but there is nothing under it.  I'm logged in with a user that has full rights.  Can anyone tell me why this section might be missing?

ESXI install hung

Hello everyone,

Brand new to virtualization and VMware but I thought I'd give it a try and see what it's all about.  I downloaded the free product called hypervisor and followed the document to do the install but it appears to have hung.  Please see the attached image of where it hung during the install.  It's been 24 hours so I'm pretty sure it's still not trying to install.  The server I'm installing it on IS on the approved list so I don't think  it's a hardware compatibility issue.

Has anyone had similare problems?  I'm not sure if i should go over to the server room and power down the server and try again?  Any advice someone could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Neil

Welcome to the Community,

the first step is to verify the checksum for the downloaded ISO image to ensure it's not corrupted.

You may also check the host's BIOS to ensure "VT-x" as well as "Execute Disable Bit" are both enabled. Depending on the hardware it may also make sense to configure power management to "Maximum Performance".

Hi Andre,

How do I verify the checksum?

I know where to look in the BIOS for "VT-x" but where is the "Execute Disable Bit" located?

Thanks,

Neil

[FFF42D20 warning 'vim.PerformanceManager'] Calculated write I/O size 1036756 for scsi0:1 is out of range -- 1036756,prevBytes = 33479446016 curBytes = 33515732480 prevCommands = 38971curCommands = 39006

Regarding this warning, Are you confgiured Storage DRS or Storage IO Control?

If so have a look at this KB and make necessary changes in collection level. Hope it will stop unnecessary events.
