Re: ESXI install hung

How do I verify the checksum?

I know where to look in the BIOS for "VT-x" but where is the "Execute Disable Bit" located?

whats the server hardware here? Execute Disable Bit should be available in the BIOS. For example check this article on enabling it on a Dell server.

How do I verify the checksum?

this KB will help you to check the md5sum of the ISO downloaded. It should match with the md5sum given in VMware download portal. If its not matches then the iso is corrupted. You have to download the ISO again.

Thanks.  I'll head over to the server room check both those settings and try again.  If it fails again I'll check to see if the download is bad.

Re: HP Flex 10 - Received Dropped Packets

Hi,

same here.

I have seen this issue on BL680c G7, also on BL680cG5 with VirtualConnect behind, but WITHOUT FLEX-10.

On the G5 servers I´m using Broadcom Mezz-Cards.

AND: This issues are since the upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1! VDS version (5.0/5.1) is equal.

If I try to connect my VDS with only one uplink per host, the drops are gone!

I have opened a SR@VMware about that.

I will keep you up2date.

Most operating systems offer an option for unattended installation where you can provide most settings including networking. However, another option is to configure a reservation in for the VM's MAC address your DHCP server.

Re: VMware design - SRM, vMotion and redundancy

If you are using SRM, then a disaster recovery discussion is happening?  If so the you should not do your second design.  SRM is the game changer here in this discussion.

The design that has each datacenter with its own infrastructure is the way to go for SRM.  Also if you are going with 5.1 or planning to go with 5.1, then you should place a SSO and Web Server at each Datacenter.  You only need one per physical site.

Linked mode also helps to make it easier to manage the vCenters.  Single Pane of Glass idea.

Check out the post that I replied to yesterday for someone else on SRM accounts, but the design would be the same for you.

Also I have a question for you:  Where did you get those VM shapes?  They are fantastic.  I would like to use them in Visio for my clients.

Thanks,

BostonTechGuy.

Issue when adding an ESXi 5.1 to VCenter 5.1

Hello everyone,

I am trying to install some ESXi 5.1 servers, and adding them to a VCenter Server 5.1, but I am having some issues doing so.

These are the steps I followed:

- I installed from scratch an ESXi 5.1 host.

- I connected through the VSphere client and created a VM with Windows 2008 Server 64 bits

- On that VM, I installed the VCenter Server 5.1 (and added my license)

- I connected to the VCenter Server 5.1 using the VSphere client and:

   - Created a Data Center

   - Tried to add the ESXi 5.1 host:

-The username and password were validated.

               - For now, I didn't add a license, I left it to Evaluation mode

               - When I click to finally add the host, it times out and I get a message: "a general system error occurred timed waiting for vpxa to start"

I have searched through the KB, but everything I have found is not applicable:

- I am using VCenter server 5.1 to add ESXi 5.1

- There are no snapshots at all in this host.

Any suggestions to continue my investigation would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ramiro

Welcome to the Community,

  • Can you confirm the network settings (especially DNS) is properly configured on the vCenter Server and the ESXi host?
  • Did you create Host-A entries for the ESXi hosts on your DNS server?
  • Can you confirm there's no firewall blocking traffic from vCenter to the hosts and vice versa?

Ok...

So I changed the "VT-x" and "Execute Disable" to enabled and then restarted the install but it has hung in the same place it did before.

I'll now check the integrity of the download and let you know what I find.

Thanks,

Neil

Your problem is here:

"* Make a datastore cluster out of theese two NetApp disks to replicate data for redundancy."

Datastore clusters do not replicate data.

So i'm checking the download...
I've performed the following steps:
Instructions on checking an MD5 checksum on a Mac:
1.In Finder, browse to /Applications/Utilities.
2.Double-click on the Terminal icon. A Terminal window will appear.
3.In the Terminal window, type: "md5 " (md5 followed by a space).
4.Drag the downloaded file from the Finder into the Terminal window.
5.Click in the Terminal window, press the Return key, and compare the checksum displayed to the screen to the one on VMware's download page.
I've performed up to "5.Click in the Terminal window, press the Return key" and it appears to be running....it's been about 5 minutes.  How long typically should it take to get results back?  In step 5 it says to compare the checksum displayed in the screen to the one on VMware's download page.  Where exactly is that page on VMware's site?
Thanks,
Neil

10Gbe NICs

$

Hi All,

Just installed ESX5i on a DELL R320 with 10GbE PCI NIC connected to SFP+ switch.

ESX has correctly picked the NIC and speeds 10000 full etc. but the VM's are showing 1GB and being connected to Intel(R) PRO/1000MT Network Connection.

Should I be worried?  This is the first machine on the backbone so I can't test a physical transfer between machines at the moment.

Re: USB Passthrough Entirely Broken in 5.1

Has there been any progress on this? We have a few ESXI servers with 5.1 installed and we are experiencing very slow USB speeds for an external backups. I have purchased a PCI-E card and tried to set it up for Passthrough with no luck, it allows me to check the box then it tells me we need to reboot which I do and after the reboot my direct passthrough is no longer there.

Welcome to the COmmunity - What you are seeing is correct the virtual NIC currently will show up as a 1 GB within the guest OS -

Re: ESXi 5.x on new Apple Mac Mini 6,2 Late 2012 *NOT* working

Question for the group...

One of the drives in my Mac Mini is the stock Apple / Hitachi 5K1000 HTS541010A9E662 1TB. When the late 2012 Mini's came out, this was actually the highest performing 1TB physical drive that would fit in the mini. However, it tends to have very high latency. There is only a single Windows Home Server 2011 VM on the drive, but it has latency that sometimes pushes 200ms, with an average around 37ms.

If you are using this drive, so you see these numbers?

If you are using another 1TB drive or above, what latency do you get with an equivalent (fairly busy) VM?
